Galatians – Truth of the Gospel – Week 1
This powerful exploration of Galatians invites us into one of the most liberating truths of Christianity: we are saved and sanctified by grace alone, not by our performance or religious achievements. The message confronts a pattern many of us fall into—starting our faith journey in the freedom of the Spirit, only to slip back into trying to perfect ourselves through human effort and religious rule-keeping. We’re reminded that there are only two types of righteousness: self-righteousness that comes from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and the righteousness of God that comes through Christ. The scandalous truth is that when we come to Jesus, His righteousness is placed upon us like a cloak, and nothing we do can change that standing before God. This isn’t a license to sin, but rather the very foundation that transforms us from the inside out. Grace acts like a flashlight—it doesn’t create the dust in the attic, it simply reveals what was already there. When we truly understand grace, it teaches us to say no to sin in a way that legalism never could. The journey from helpful spiritual practices to religious tradition to binding doctrine is one we must guard against. What begins as life-giving can become death-dealing when we make it a requirement rather than a response to love. We’re called to examine whether we’ve added anything to the simple gospel: is it Jesus plus our traditions, Jesus plus our rituals, Jesus plus our performance? Or is it simply Jesus, whose finished work is completely sufficient?
