Galatians Series – Ken Grenfell
What if the foundation of your entire relationship with God had nothing to do with your performance, your failures, or your best efforts? In this message, we journey back to one of the most extraordinary moments in all of Scripture, Genesis 15, where God makes a covenant with Abram that changes everything. We explore the ancient ritual of covenant-cutting, where two parties would walk between the halves of slaughtered animals as a solemn oath. But here is where the story takes a breathtaking turn: Abram is put into a deep, God-induced sleep, and only God walks through. A smoking fire pot and a blazing torch, symbols of divine holiness and consuming glory, pass between the pieces alone. God swore by himself, because there was no one greater to swear by, and took sole responsibility for the covenant. This is not a picture of partnership. This is a picture of pure, unilateral grace. The message draws a direct line from that ancient night to the cross of Jesus Christ, and then to us, reminding us that we stand in a grace we did not initiate, cannot earn, and can never lose. We are invited to know, with a deep, settled, unshakeable knowing, that our spiritual standing rests not on our fragile humanness but on God’s unbreakable promise.
